Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate women¡¯s knowledge and screening behaviors for breast cancer in Dae-Jeon by survey.

Materials and Methods: This study included 82 inhabitant women, who participated voluntarily in free screening program for early detection of breast cancer. The questionnaire was composed of age of participant, questions for knowledge of breast cancer, attitude and behaviors related to breast cancer screening. The ages of participants ranged from 32 to 67 years (mean age: 50.2 years). We compared this study with previous studies performed in Hwasun-gun, Seoul, Pusan and Chun-cheon.

Results: 46.3% of participants had been performed breast self examination and 81.7% of participants had been performed screening mammography. The most frequent cause of related breast cancer screening was regular check-ups (44.8%) and the most frequent barrier was inconvenience of take time (26.7%). In knowledge of breast cancer, the mean value of correct answer was 1.80 in Daejeon. There was statistically significant difference between the cities in terms of knowledge of breast cancer. Pusan showed the highest values(2.02) among the cities (p=0.000, p < 0.05).

Conclusion: These data suggest that active public relations and education are essential for early detection of breast cancer. This study may be applied to plan and develop screening program.
